God's Thoughts Towards Us by Steve Montag

This message was excerpted from "The Master of Breakthroughs" Steve Montag

“O Israel, trust in the Lord: He is their help and their shield.  O House of Aaron, trust in the Lord; He is their help and their shield.  You who fear the Lord, trust in the Lord; He is their help and their shield.  The Lord has been mindful of us; He will bless us; He will bless the house of Israel; He will bless the house of Aaron.  He will bless those who fear the Lord, both small and great.  May the Lord give you increase more and more, you and your children.  May you be blessed by the Lord, who made heaven and earth.”  Psalm 115:9

God is letting us know in this passage that He has not forgotten about us.  He hasn’t forgotten the promises He’s made to us in His Word.  He is known as the Ancient of Days but He never has a “senior moment.”  He doesn’t forget what He says.

The Word of God is filled with statements declaring the truth that God is constantly thinking about us and always aware of where we’re at and what we’re going through.  That word in verse 12 “mindful” comes from a Hebrew word which means “brings to remembrance or remembers.”  It has this particular meaning in this verse: “to remember His people graciously, to remember individuals with kindness, granting requests, protecting and delivering.”

He is always mindful and remembers us for our good.  He constantly remembers to do good things for us.  According to verse 13, He remembers and He blesses all who fear Him, all who respect and love Him, from the least to the greatest.  Because in the sight of God we are all equal, He loves us all equally.

There is another place in Psalms where the word mindful is used.  Psalm 8:4 says,

“What is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him?  For You have made him a little lower than the angels, and You have crowned him with glory and honor.”

When you consider what rotten, rebellious sinners we were that’s a mind-boggling thing that God is mindful of us and loves us.  What is even more amazing is that when God thinks about us, it’s not just a brief passing thought because He’s so busy running the universe.  It isn’t merely an occasional thought towards us; the truth is He thinks about us constantly.  His thoughts concerning us are abundant.  Psalm 40:5 says,

“Many, O Lord my God, are Your wonderful works which You have done; and Your thoughts towards us cannot be recounted to You in order; If I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.”

That’s a lot of thoughts!  Let’s get an idea of how many those are.  Let’s look at Psalm 139:17 and 18.

“How precious are Your thoughts to me, O God!  How great is the sum of them!  If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand (on the beach);”

Does God love us?  Does He think about us?  All the time!  His thoughts towards us are more in number than the sand on the seashore or the stars in the sky.  What kind of thoughts are they?  David says they are precious.

Remember the meaning of the word “mindful”.  He remembers us graciously and with kindness.  The Lord tells us Himself not just the quantity of thoughts He has towards us but the quality of them in Jeremiah 29:11:

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace (wholeness, well being, health, blessing) and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

His thoughts towards us are greater, higher and more glorious than we can ever comprehend.  God says through Isaiah, “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways like My ways, says the Lord.  For as the heavens are higher than the earth so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts higher than your thoughts.”  They are glorious, exalted and wonderful. God has wonderful things in store for us.

We need to remember that when we become restless and discouraged waiting for God to come through for us.  We need to remember how absolutely special and incredibly loved we are by God at those times when we think He has forgotten us, He can’t do it!!

He is constantly thinking about all 5-plus billion people there are on the planet as individuals.  As individuals he knows exactly how many hairs are on our heads.  He knows exactly what we’re going through.  He knows everything about us!

When the devil whispers in your ear and you begin to throw a self-pity party notice that the only guest at that party is the devil, no one else ever shows up.  The devil will tell you: “God doesn’t have time to think about you, those promises He’s made to you He’s forgotten that, He’s busy.”

Read Isaiah 49:14 and put your name in where it says “Zion.”

“But Zion said, ‘The Lord has forsaken me, and my Lord has forgotten me.’  Can a woman forget her nursing child, and not have compassion on the son of her womb? Surely they may forget, yet I will not forget you.  See, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands; your walls (your dwelling, your life) are continually before Me.”

It’s impossible for God to forget you.  When the spikes were fastening His hands to the cross, your name was being autographed on them!  Don’t ever think He’s forgotten about you.
